History of the breed

Wessex Saddleback Pigs originated from the new forest area in England, but after 1914 were mainly bred in the south and south west of England.

A Wessex Saddleback breed society was inaugurated in England in 1918 and kept a separate herd book for the breed up until 1967 when the breed amalgamated its herd book with the Essex saddleback breed. Together they became known as the British Saddleback Pig. The only Saddleback Pigs to be imported to Australia were of the Wessex breed.

The importation was in 1931 by R.Turpen of Queensland The A.P.B.A herd book records the importation of 17 Wessex Saddleback Pigs from England between 1931 & 1953.
